Stock Market LIVE Updates on Budget 2026: Market expert view

Stock Market LIVE Updates on Budget 2026: Indian equity markets witnessed sharp, event-driven volatility during the special Budget Day session, with benchmark indices slipping into a risk-off mode as investors digested the Union Budget 2026–27. Initial optimism faded quickly as higher transaction costs driven by the increase in Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on equity derivatives—and the lack of strong measures to revive foreign capital inflows weighed on sentiment and near-term liquidity expectations. Selling pressure intensified across metals, PSU banks, and index heavyweights, while defensives such as healthcare and IT showed relative resilience. A softer rupee and muted FII participation further reinforced cautious positioning. While the Budget reaffirmed long-term intent through record infrastructure spending and a manufacturing push, the market response signalled near-term disappointment, with participants choosing to book profits and reassess risk amid fiscal and policy clarity gaps.

Stock Market LIVE Updates on Budget 2026: Market technical view

Stock Market LIVE Updates on Budget 2026: The benchmark Nifty index witnessed heightened volatility on Union Budget Day, recording an intraday swing of 869 points, which was its widest trading range since June 04, 2024. Market sentiment turned sharply negative during Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech, particularly after the proposal to increase the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on Futures and Options, which triggered aggressive selling across the market.

The Nifty slipped to an intraday low of 24571 before stabilizing and recovering part of the losses, eventually closing at 24825 with a decline of nearly 2%. On the technical front, the index formed a bearish candle accompanied by a long lower shadow on a daily chart, reflecting deep intraday selling followed by partial buying interest.

Going ahead, the zone of 24700–24650 is expected to act as the immediate support for the Nifty index. A sustained move below 24650 may accelerate the downside momentum and open the gates for a further correction toward 24500, followed by 24350 in the short term. On the upside, the region between 24950–25000 will continue to pose a immediate hurdle.

MARKET COMMENT:: Sonal Varma, Managing Director and Chief Economist (India and Asia ex‑Japan), Nomura

Budget is a mixed bag. It delivers on the push towards boosting manufacturing, attracting data centre investments, maintaining the pace of public capex and reforms on customs duty, but allocation on defense is lower than expected, and the hike in derivative tax is a negative surprise for equity markets.

Gross market borrowings are closer to Nomura views, but higher than market expectations, and will mean continued market concerns around large centre and state bond supply next year.

From a macro perspective, we were also focused on the fiscal targets, and both the fiscal deficit target and the central government debt target are higher than expected, and suggest a slower pace of fiscal consolidation. We await the revised GDP series in end-February to assess whether that changes these ratios.

The budget assumptions are mixed, because nominal GDP growth of 10% is achievable, gross tax revenue growth of 8% appears conservative but disinvestment target of Rs 800 billion appears optimistic at first glance.

Overall, the lagged impact of past monetary easing and stronger global growth should support real GDP growth of 7.1% in FY27, with the budget focus mainly on manufacturing, exports, and infrastructure.
