Ex-military officers who served in Argentina's brutal dictatorship and their families staged a rare rally on Saturday to push for the release of fellow officers imprisoned for human rights abuses committed during the junta's 1976-1983 rule. Saturday's demonstration was seen as a provocation in the country of Nunca Ms, the slogan that represents Argentina's commitment to never again return to authoritarianism. Further raising tensions, the officers gathered in Plaza de Mayo, the historic site of protests by women searching for children who had been abducted, detained and disappeared" by the junta. Circling the plaza in silent protest every Thursday for decades, the women became known as the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. To the army officers' critics, including dozens of counter-protesters who also flocked to Plaza de Mayo in downtown Buenos Aires on Saturday, the brazen rally marked a worrying sign that cracks were starting to appear in Argentina's national consensus about the blood
The chief of staff to President Javier Milei of Argentina resigned on Friday, less than a week after the governing party won a new mandate to accelerate his programme of radical reform in pivotal midterm elections. Guillermo Francos, a 75-year-old career politician with decades of experience at the heart of government, said in a statement that he was stepping down so that Milei may face without constraints the stage of government that begins after the national elections." Francos' departure after weeks of speculation was expected to herald a wider Cabinet shake-up, as is common in Argentina following elections. Interior Minister Guillermo Cataln followed suit on Friday. Riding high off his party's surprise landslide win in Sunday's legislative elections and USD 40 billion in pledged funds from a friendly Trump administration, Milei announced that his main spokesperson, Manuel Adorni an ideological defender of the president's agenda known for his combative press conferences littered
Argentina's libertarian leader is lavishing praise on Donald Trump ahead of his first White House meeting with the US president on Tuesday. It's a tactic that has helped transform President Javier Milei's cash-strapped country into one of the Trump administration's closest allies. The effusive declarations are nothing new for Milei whose dramatic cuts to state spending and attacks on woke leftists have won him a following among US conservatives. Your commitment to life, freedom and peace has restored hope to the world, Milei wrote on social media Monday, congratulating the US president on securing a ceasefire deal in Gaza, where a truce is holding after a devastating, two-year Israel-Hamas war. It is an honour to consider you not only an ally in the defence of those values, but also a dear friend and an example of leadership that inspires all those who believe in freedom, he said. The Trump-Milei bromance has already paid off for Argentina most recently, to the tune of a USD 20 .
The Argentina football team, along with star player Lionel Messi, will most likely play a match against Australia in Kochi when the South American squad visits Kerala in November, official sources in the Sports department said. No date has been fixed for the friendly match, but it will take place in Kochi on any day between November 12 and November 18 when the Argentina team and Messi are in Kerala, the sources said. Australia will most likely be the opponent of the South American team, which won the 2022 World Cup, the sources said. There were some controversies involving the Argentina team's visit to Kerala, with some reports in early August this year saying that the South American squad, with Messi, will not come to the state. However, later the same month, state Sports Minister V Abdurahiman had said that the team would arrive in Kerala in November.
The party of Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei suffered a sweeping setback Sunday in Buenos Aires provincial elections that are viewed as a barometer for how the party will perform in congressional midterms and a key test for the embattled president. Milei's recently formed libertarian party lagged with nearly 34 per cent of the vote, with the majority of votes counted. Peronism, the ideologically flexible populist movement that has held sway in Argentina for decades, lead polls with nearly 47 per cent of the vote. The results were a significant blow to Milei, who has made radical changes in Argentina perpetually crisis-stricken economy. While the peso has stabilised from previously soaring inflation, harsh scarcity measures have been felt by much of the South American nation's working class. Eyes were on the local election because the province is polarised between the political currents and seen as an indication of how the balance is tipping before congressional ...
Argentina's national football team, led by legendary player Lionel Messi, will not visit Kerala, state Sports Minister V Abdurahiman said on Monday. The minister had earlier insisted that the Messi-led Argentina side would visit the state as announced by the government, and that the sponsor had already paid the match fee for the event. He told reporters on Monday that the foreign team informed them that they were facing difficulties in visiting the state in October this year, but the sponsor responded that "we are interested only in a visit in the month of October." Abdurahiman had earlier said the team was more likely to come in October or November this year, and that they would be treated as state guests, with their security, accommodation, and other facilities provided by the government.
