Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday said the state government is sincere and committed to ensuring 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes, and the issue will be discussed in the October 23 Cabinet meeting, after getting Supreme Court's judgment copy. The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the Telangana government's petition challenging a high court's decision that stayed a government order providing 42 per cent reservation to Backward Classes in local bodies. "The Congress Party and Government have a sincere and committed intention to ensure 42 per cent reservations for BCs. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a six-year central scheme aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in pulses production, with a financial outlay of Rs 11,440 crore. The "Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses", approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be for the period from 2025-26 to 2030-31. The mission follows Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's announcement in the 2025-26 Budget. The mission will particularly focus on increasing production of tur, urad and masur, with assured procurement by government agencies National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) from registered farmers. "We are going to start a mission on pulses for six years. Several initiatives will be taken under this," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after the Cabinet meeting. In a bid to promote research, the government on Wednesday approved a Rs 2,277 crore umbrella scheme for doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships and promoting knowledge sharing through a travel and symposia grant. The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 'Capacity Building and Human Resource Development (CBHRD)' of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) with a total outlay of Rs 2,277.397 crore for the period of the 15th Finance Commission Cycle 2021-22 to 2025-26. The Punjab Cabinet on Wednesday approved a one-time settlement scheme that will allow traders and businessmen to pay arrears pending under different laws before the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the state. The cabinet, in a meeting here headed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, also gave approval to set up a special court in Mohali to deal with cases of the National Investigation Agency. Addressing the media later, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the cabinet gave prosecution sanction against former Punjab minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot in a corruption case registered by vigilance bureau in 2022. Sharing more details, Cheema said a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme will be launched for recovery of pre-GST arrears. The inter-ministerial consultations for the Export Promotion Mission have concluded and the proposal will soon be sent to the Union Cabinet seeking its approval, sources said. The government is considering support measures worth about Rs 25,000 crore for exporters under the Export Promotion Mission, announced in the Budget, for six financial years (2025-2031), PTI had reported citing sources last month. The mission, if approved, can help insulate domestic exporters from global trade uncertainties arising from Trump tariffs. The US has imposed a hefty 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, starting August 27. "So export promotion mission, you know, the inter-ministerial consultations have happened, and soon we will be going to cabinet. Already in the Budget, there was an announcement, and it would be a kind of a scheme which would be fungible," sources said.
The Meghalaya cabinet on Thursday approved amendments to the state's excise rules, a move expected to generate an additional Rs 90 crore in revenue, officials said. The cabinet also accepted the independent inquiry committee report on Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited and gave its nod for the financial closure of major central power schemes. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the amendments were aimed at making the state more competitive with neighbouring states. "We want our rates and pricing to reflect market realities. This will make us more attractive to consumers and increase our revenue," he told reporters after the meeting. The Union Cabinet on Thursday increased the budgetary outlay for the flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) by Rs 1,920 crore to Rs 6,520 crore to boost the food processing sector. The enhanced funds, to be provided this fiscal, will be utilised for 50 multi-product food irradiation units and 100 food testing labs. The decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "The outlay of PMKSY has been increased to Rs 6,520 crore," I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after cabinet decisions.
