The data nerds are fighting back. After watching data sets be altered or disappear from U.S. government websites in unprecedented ways after President Donald Trump began his second term, an army of outside statisticians, demographers and computer scientists have joined forces to capture, preserve and share data sets, sometimes clandestinely. Their goal is to make sure they are available in the future, believing that democracy suffers when policymakers don't have reliable data and that national statistics should be above partisan politics. There are such smart, passionate people who care deeply about not only the Census Bureau, but all the statistical agencies, and ensuring the integrity of the statistical system. Paddy sowing so far this Kharif season is higher by 13 per cent at 4.53 lakh hectares, according to the government data. Sowing of paddy stood at 4 lakh hectares in the same period last year. The Department of Agriculture has released progress of area coverage under kharif crops (summer-sown) as on June 13, 2025, according to an official statement on Tuesday. The acreage of pulses has also increased to 3.07 lakh hectare from 2.6 lakh hectare. Sowing of Shri Anna cum Coarse cereals remained flat at 5.89 lakh hectare so far this kharif season as against 5.9 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. In the non-foodgrains category, the acreage of oilseeds has risen to 2.05 lakh hectares so far from 1.5 lakh hectare in the same period last year. Sugarcane sowing is also slightly higher so far at 55.07 lakh hectare against 54.88 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) will provide access to the independent director database to six executive search firms, a move that will further help in finding the qualified independent directors for companies. The institute is maintaining the Independent Director Databank (IDDB), mandated under the companies law. The databank is a repository of details of professionals eligible to serve as independent directors. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed by the institute with six entities -- Korn Ferry, ABC Consultants, EMA Partners, DHR Global, Sheffield Hawroth and Vahura -- on Friday in the national capital. The database has information of around 32,000 independent directors. "Collaboration with search firms of this stature will help ensure the companies have access to skilled professionals, aligned with the evolving requirements of corporate governance," IICA Director General and Chief Executive Officer Ajay Bhushan Prasad Pandey said.
