Veteran actors Asha Parekh, Helen, composer AR Rahman and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar were among the friends and colleagues who paid their last respects to legendary singer Asha Bhosle at her residence here on Monday. Bhosle passed away on Sunday morning due to multi-organ failure at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital. The final darshan is underway at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, and will continue until 3 pm. Her body has been placed in a glass casket, draped in the tricolour and adorned with white lilies, with a ceremonial police salute accorded as part of state honours. A large smiling portrait of Bhosle stood near the casket, surrounded by elaborate white floral arrangements. Songs from across her decades-long career such as "Aao Huzoor Tumko", "Aaiye Meherban", "Jhumka Gira Re", "Dil Cheez Kya Hai", "O Saathi Re" and "Yai Re Yai Re" played in the background. President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday condoled the demise of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle and said it has created a huge void in the world of music. Her legendary career as an iconic singer has defined an era of music in India, Murmu said in an X post. Bhosle, 92, died on Sunday. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday evening due to chest infection and exhaustion, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle said. "The passing of Asha Bhosle Ji has created a huge void in the world of music. Her legendary career as an iconic singer has defined an era of music in India," the president said. Murmu said she had fond memories of having interacted with Bhosle personally. "She led her life on her own terms as an artist and as an individual. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tributes to iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar on her birth anniversary. He said a chowk in Ayodhya will be named after her on Wednesday, which he added will be a fitting tribute to her. He tweeted, "Remembering Lata Didi on her birth anniversary. There is so much that I recall the innumerable interactions in which she would shower so much affection. I am glad that today, a Chowk in Ayodhya will be named after her. It is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest Indian icons." Born in 1929, Mangeshkar ruled the playback singing for decades. She died in February this year.
Noted playback singers Kumar Sanu and Shailendra Singh and music-composer duo Anand-Milind will be conferred with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award for different years, an official said on Tuesday. They will be presented the prestigious award on Wednesday (September 28), the birth anniversary of the late legendary singer, at her birthplace Indore. Singh, who has made a special place in the heart of music aficionados with his distinct voice in 1970-1980 decades will be given the Lata Mangeshkar Award for 2019, while Anand-Milind who have composed music for over 200 films, will be conferred with the honour for 2020. Sanu, who lent his velvet voice to numerous popular songs in the 1990s, will be given the award for 2021, the official said.
