MCD to set up feeding points across wards to tackle dog bite menace

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma has directed officials to set up stray dog feeding points in every ward of the city. Three to four locations will be identified in each ward, in coordination with the local municipal councillor, where these feeding points will be set up, Sharma said. Officials have asked to submit an action report within a week on the move. Sharma emphasised that the MCD is intensifying the sterilisation and vaccination drives at Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres across the city. A sub-committee has been working on related strategies to control the stray dog population and prevent the spread of diseases, such as rabies. Sharma said unregulated feeding by people in public spaces often leads to the formation of packs, resulting in conflicts and a rise in dog-bite incidents. The move came following the Supreme Court urging the MCD to act promptly to rein in the dog bite menace. Sharma appealed to all councillors, resi

SC declines urgent plea against MCD notification on picking of stray dogs

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused urgent listing of a plea challenging a notification issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi with regard to picking up of stray dogs. A bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi declined to accord urgent hearing after a lawyer mentioned that an application has been filed in this regard. The application submitted that MCD issued the notification despite orders having been reserved by the apex court. The whole problem of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR is because of "inaction" of local authorities, the top court had said on August 14 while reserving its order on the interim prayer seeking a stay on the August 11 directions passed by the apex court. A three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria had reserved its order in the matter. A two-judge bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan had on August 11 directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to start picking up stray dogs from all localities "at the earliest" and

MLAs can now use funds to carry out development works through MCD: CM Gupta

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said the MLAs can now use their funds to carry out development works through the MCD as against the earlier norms when such projects could only be executed through the Irrigation and Flood Control Department or the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). The chief minister said this often caused delays in completing smaller projects, as these departments prioritised larger works. With this change, minor development works will now be handled more swiftly by the Municipal Corporation, she added. The chief minister has introduced key reforms to fast-track development projects, enhance transparency and eliminate financial hurdles, and taken crucial decisions in construction-related procedures, said an official statement. Gupta said these decisions will ensure rapid execution of development works, ease the burden on implementing agencies and provide financial relief to construction companies, steering the capital

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday said it has intensified its efforts to address the issue of stray dogs in the national capital, following a meeting of a sub-committee formed to tackle the problem. The sub-committee, constituted by Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, held its meeting earlier in the day under the chairmanship of Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee, Sunder Singh. To speed up dog sterilisation drive, the committee has decided to re-engage with NGOs currently involved in the campaign and bring more capable organisations on board. Officials said fresh dialogue will be initiated with existing partners, while new NGOs will also be invited to participate. The panel also resolved to seek support from the Delhi and central governments to remove procedural hurdles in the sterilisation programme. Officials said the drive will now be planned constituency-wise for better execution. "The Corporation is committed to addressing this issue with cit

Delhi may scrap MCD health trade licence rule for opening new eateries

In a measure to boost the hospitality sector in the national capital, the Delhi government is likely to soon do away with the requirement of obtaining a health trade licence from the civic body for opening restaurants and eateries in the city. Lt Governor V K Saxena, speaking at the "Expresso" event hosted by The Indian Express on Friday, said the requirement of the license for opening restaurants in the city is being abolished. No immediate reaction from the Delhi government or the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was available on the development. Recently, the Delhi government did away with the need to obtain 'Eating House Registration and Lodging Certificate' from the police by hotels, clubs, restaurants and guest houses for getting a license to serve liquor. The L-G, last month, withdrew the sanction granted to the Delhi Police Commissioner for the issuance of the eating house registration certificate under an ease-of-doing-business initiative. NHAI raises concerns over MCD's advertising, parking on National Highways

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) raised objections to a string of issues with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), including outdoor advertising on highways and an illegal parking lot, officials said on Tuesday. In a recently held meeting, the central body's concerns were conveyed to the Delhi government, which has MCD's administrative control. "The MCD has been allotting space for advertisements and hoardings alongside national highways, which poses a safety risk to road users. The MCD may promptly remove all such advertisements," NHAI officials said during the meeting. In response, the MCD said, "Outdoor Advertising Policy 2017, approved by the Supreme Court, applies to all of Delhi. The MCD is ready for joint inspection with the NHAI if any issue arises." The MCD further argued that it is allocating space to the advertisers under the Delhi Municipal Act, 1957. "The policy itself contains all measures for traffic safety, including a structural stability ...

The chief minister was speaking at the inauguration of development work in Pitampura under her Shalimar Bagh constituency. At the event, an elderly lady raised the issue of stray dog menace.
