Will ensure MCD areas become as clean, beautiful as NDMC zones: LG Saxena

Delhiites have chosen a new leadership for change, and this transformation will positively impact both the city and its people, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Friday. Speaking at the 'Samvaad with Swachhta Sainiks' event here, he said while some areas, particularly those under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), are well-maintained, others require significant improvement. We will ensure that MCD areas also become as clean and beautiful as NDMC zones, he said. The LG highlighted that keeping Delhi is primarily the responsibility of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which has a workforce of 50,000 sanitation workers. Saxena praised sanitation workers for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Yamuna floods, and the G20 beautification drive. He also urged citizens to also play an active role. When we see potholes and garbage in the capital, it raises concerns about whether we are truly representing the country's capital, he added.

LIC, MCD directed to pay Rs 4.8 lakh claim, Rs 40,000 compensation

The central Delhi consumer disputes redressal forum has directed the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to pay a claim amount of Rs 4.8 lakh to the wife and daughter of a deceased cleaning staff of the civic body, along with a compensation of Rs 40,000, for causing them sufferings, harassment and mental agony. Rejecting the LIC's argument that the policies had lapsed, the forum also observed that the contract to deduct the premium amount from the salary and then remit it to the insurer was between the MCD and the LIC and the employee was unaware of the non-deduction of the said amount. The forum comprising President Inder Jeet Singh and member Rashmi Bansal was hearing a complaint filed by the wife and daughter of a deceased safai karamchari, who alleged deficiency in service by the LIC for rejecting their claims. In an order dated October 14, the forum noted that the employee, appointed in the Karol Bagh zone in May 2005, had opted for the ...

The Supreme Court on Friday questioned the "tearing hurry" on the part of the lieutenant governor's office to exercise executive powers for holding the election for the sixth member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Standing Committee. A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and R Mahadevan asked the LG's office to not hold elections for the post of chairman of the Standing Committee till it hears the plea of Mayor Shelly Oberoi against the September 27 Standing Committee polls. "We will view it seriously if you hold an election for the MCD Standing Committee chairman," the bench told senior advocate Sanjay Jain, appearing for the LG's office. It said that initially it was not inclined to entertain this petition but had to issue notice because of Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena's decision to exercise his powers under Section 487 of the Delhi Municipal Act. "Democracy will be in danger if you start using executive powers under Section 487 of the DMC Act. How can you interdict the ...
