Mobile phone manufacturing in value terms has jumped 21-fold to Rs 4.1 lakh crore in India in the last 10 years with government policy push but actions of enforcement agencies are bringing unpredictability which needs to be checked, a top official of mobile phone makers industry body ICEA said. While speaking about the achievement of the mobile industry in the last 10 years, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said that the next phase of growth in the country will come from exports and there is a need to build domestic champions in the sector as part of government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) plan. "Unpredictability in ease of doing business arising out of some actions of enforcement agencies needs to be checked. We need to build an environment of trust between enforcement agencies and the industry," Mohindroo said. India's smartphone exports to the US jumped to USD 3.53 billion in April-December this fiscal against USD 998 million in the same period last year, according to the Commerce Ministry data. The increasing outbound shipments led to an increase in the smarphones' market share to 7.76 per cent during April-December this fiscal from 2 per cent in the same period of last year, the data showed. Increasing exports have made India the third-biggest smartphone exporter to the US. An official said that an increase in overall smartphone production has helped in pushing exports. During the nine-month period of this fiscal, the share of China and Vietnam declined. The US smartphone imports from the top five suppliers also declined during April-December to USD 45.1 billion from USD 49.1 billion in FY'23. Mobile phone manufacturing in value terms jumped 21-fold to Rs 4.1 lakh crore in India in the last 10 years as government policy measures like PLI played a critical role in attracting global players to boost local production, industry body ICEA said in a statement. India now produces 97 per cent of its total mobile phone demand locally and 30 per cent of the total production in financial year 2024 is meant for export, the India Cellular and Electronics Association said. "Mobile phone production surged from Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs 4,10,000 crore in FY'24, registering an increase of 2000 per cent. In 2014-15, mobile phone exports from India were a mere Rs 1,556 crore. The industry expects to end FY24 with an estimated export of Rs 1,20,000 crore. This would mean a 7500 per cent increase in exports over a decade," ICEA said. Mobile phone industry body ICEA has opposed incorporation of a new standard for providing direct television service on handsets in absence of its acceptance in global standards. State-run Telecommunications Engineering Centre (TEC) had floated a consultation paper for television broadcasting directly on mobile handheld devices or Direct to Mobile Broadcasting technology. In the process, TEC has sought industry views on incorporating a video standard, ATSC 3.0 in the national standard. According to India Cellular and Electronics Association, whose members include Apple, Nokia, Lava, Foxconn, Dixon etc, India is aggressively pushing for mobile manufacturing in the country and all the major brands are producing and exporting phones from India.
