Model code violation case: Court allows Arvind Kejriwal to renew passport

A special MP/MLA court in Sultanpur has granted conditional permission for passport renewal to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and asked him to take its permission before travelling abroad. Special judge Shubham Verma on August 6 directed Kejriwal to seek court's prior approval before leaving the country. The former CM's counsel, advocate Madan Singh, on Thursday said his client had filed a plea citing difficulties in travelling overseas. Acting on the plea, the court allowed the renewal of Kejriwal's passport with the condition that he must inform the court before any foreign trip. A case was registered against Kejriwal in connection with alleged violations of the model code of conduct during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi district's Gauriganj and Musafirkhana areas. Kejriwal is currently out on bail in the case, which remains in abeyance following directions of the Supreme Court.

Charges framed against AAP MP Sanjay Singh, next hearing on July 5

A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur on Tuesday framed charges against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in a case related to violation of the model code of conduct and COVID-19 guidelines four years ago. The court also rejected Singh's discharge plea and scheduled the next hearing for July 5. Singh's advocate, Madan Pratap Singh, said that the AAP leader appeared in court on Tuesday as it turned down his application for discharge and accepted the charge-framing petition, proceeding to formally frame charges against him. The matter was then posted for next month due to the absence of two other accused in the case. The case dates back to April 13, 2021, when, during the panchayat elections, Singh was accused of holding a public meeting without permission in Hasanpur village under Bandhua Kala Police Station limits. HC refuses to stay case against Kapil Mishra for 2020 poll code violation

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to stay the trial court proceedings against city Law Minister Kapil Mishra for allegedly making objectionable statements and violating the model code of conduct in 2020. Justice Ravinder Dudeja also issued notice to Delhi Police on the BJP leader's plea challenging a sessions court order that had dismissed his petition against the summons issued to him by a magisterial court in the case. "There is no need to stay the trial court proceedings. There is no stoppage of proceedings. This court does not feel it (is) necessary to stay the proceedings. The trial court is at liberty to proceed further with the matter," the judge said. The high court listed the matter for further hearing on May 19. Delhi polls: Over 730 cases of violating model code of conduct registered

More than 730 cases of alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) have so far been registered ahead of the February 5 Delhi Assembly polls, an official said on Monday. The cases were lodged between January 7, when the MCC into force, and January 26. A total of 22,857 people were arrested under various legal provisions, including those under the Excise Act, during this period, according to a statement. Ahead of the polls, police have intensified vigilance at border checkpoints and conducted crackdowns on illegal activities, including smuggling of arms, liquor and drugs. Delhi Police has recorded 738 cases of alleged MCC violations and confiscated 364 illegal firearms and 445 cartridges, the statement said. It has also seized 61,610 litres of liquor worth more than Rs 1.8 crore, 156.411 kg of drugs worth over Rs 72 crore and more than 1,200 banned injections. EC defends model code as vital for a level playing field in elections

One of the key reasons cited by the government to push for simultaneous polls has been that frequent imposition of model code disrupts development work and normal public life, but the Election Commission has asserted it is a "vital instrumentality" aimed at providing level playing field in polls. With the Model Code of Conduct coming into force for the assembly polls announced on February 5, the Delhi government on Tuesday issued various guidelines barring display of photos and references to the elected dispensation or politicians of any other party on official websites. The Congress on Monday demanded that the Election Commission take action against IPS officer Rashmi Shukla for allegedly violating the model code of conduct during the Maharashtra assembly elections by meeting Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Maharashtra polls: Seizures amount to Rs 660 cr; 8,668 complaints resolved

The seizures of cash, alcohol, and other items amid the poll code conduct for the Maharashtra assembly elections amounted to Rs 660.16 crore, while 8,668 of 8,678 complaints lodged through the C-Vigil app were resolved. Police seizes Rs 3.70 cr in Palghar amid Maharashtra poll code in place

Police have seized more than Rs 3.70 crore cash from a van in Palghar district of Maharashtra amid the code of conduct in place for the November 20 assembly polls, an official said on Saturday. The cash was seized at Wada in the coastal district on Friday, police inspector Datta Kindre said. "The police's vigilance and flying squad received a tip-off that a van was transporting cash through the district. Based on the information, the team intercepted the van and carried out a check, during which it found that Rs 3,70,50,000 cash was being transported. The driver and security personnel failed to produce valid documents required for the transportation of the cash," he said. They told the police that the cash was being taken from a company based in Navi Mumbai to Vikramgad in Palghar, he added.
