PWD to partner with Indian Oil for maintenance and upgrade of flyovers

The Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to partner with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to garner support for its CSR initiative 'adopt a flyover' project, sources said on Friday. Under the initiative, private firms can adopt public infrastructure, taking responsibility for its maintenance, beautification, and cleanliness, in return for limited advertising rights on the adopted structures. In July this year, a decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma to prepare large infrastructure proposals that align with the public-private partnership (PPP) framework and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The shift in policy comes amid concerns over delays and cost overruns in previous public infrastructure projects due to funding limitations. One of those projects is the 'adopt a flyover' project, based on the PPP model for cleanliness and better care of road infrastructure, officials added. According to officials, a meeting was held ...

PWD issues order to make essential buildings earthquake resistant

The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued an order to survey and retrofit all essential buildings in the city and make them earthquake resistant, officials on Thursday said. In the wake of the deadly earthquake in Myanmar which claimed the lives of around 3,000 people, the PWD's order has been issued to all staff to strictly adhere to the National Building Code and other local by-laws. "Identify critical infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, fire stations, police stations and other essential buildings and conduct vulnerability assessments to determine the need for retrofitting or seismic upgrading," the order issued by the PWD says. Due to its proximity to the Himalayas, the national capital is located in zone IV, which has fairly high seismicity where the general occurrence of earthquakes is of 5-6 magnitude, according to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). "Ensure that all PWD construction projects in Delhi strictly adhere to the National Building Code, local

82% of PWDs lack insurance, 42% unaware of AB-PMJAY, reveals survey

A nationwide survey by rights groups has revealed that 82 per cent of persons with disabilities lack any form of insurance while 42 per cent are unaware of the government's flagship health scheme, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). The findings were presented at the National Disability Network (NDN) Meeting last week, where civil society groups and disability rights organisations from over 20 states convened to discuss pressing issues faced by the community. The survey, conducted under the 'Ayushman for All' campaign by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), gathered responses from more than 5,000 persons with disabilities across 34 states and union territories. Despite the scheme's aim of providing health coverage to vulnerable populations, only 28 per cent of disabled respondents reported having applied for it. "These numbers aren't just statistics; they represent real people left without essential healthcare," said

Parvesh Verma inspects drainage projects in Delhi, launches new helpline

Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma conducted inspections across multiple constituencies on Saturday, reviewing sanitation and drainage projects ahead of the summer and monsoon seasons. He also announced a new four-digit PWD helpline (1908) to streamline public grievance redressal. Verma, in a post on X, said that during his first departmental meeting, senior officials struggled to recall the existing 10-digit helpline number. "Who can remember such a long number? Perhaps that's why the previous government chose it -- to ensure complaints weren't registered, he remarked. He then sought a four-digit alternative from the central government, which approved 1908. The minister emphasised that citizens can now easily report PWD-related issues, while other essential helplines --1916 for water board complaints -- remain operational. During his visit to the Trinagar constituency with local MLA Tilak Ram Gupta, Verma expressed disappointment over the lack of developme
