Imagine this scenario: a woman hails a cab late at night. As she makes her way through the near-empty roads, she realises the driver has taken a route that is nowhere near her destination. Upon confrontation, the driver remains calm, yet doesn’t change the route. Slyly, she touches her pendant and presses it twice.

Within seconds, she gets a call from her loved ones enquiring about her whereabouts, which, in turn, leads to the driver getting discouraged from embarking on his heinous intentions. Ziveg’s smart jewellery makes this possible.

Leaf Wearables, in partnership with Ziveg, has brought out the Safer jewellery range. It includes pendants, cuffs and bracelets that make travelling safe — not only smarter but also fashionable. Each piece of jewellery comes with a small Safer device that can be paired with an app on the smartphone via bluetooth. The device can be charged via a USB cable. The app —called Safer — is available on the Google Play Store for free.

Once installed and paired, the device works even if the smartphone is at a distance. The app works on Facebook/Google-based login. After the user downloads the app, she can send out invites to people on her contact list and once accepted, she can list them as her emergency contacts. It is integral for the emergency contacts to accept the invitation in order to track the user’s whereabouts.

At the time of emergency, the device, which is hidden, can be pressed twice and a notification is relayed to the contacts listed in the app. It also has a feature called “SaferWalk” that helps one’s contacts track the route that the user takes.

I decided to test the Safer device. I received a circular orange device set inside a golden triangular pendant with an equally golden chain to wear around my neck. Though the device was inconspicuous, the jewellery sure attracted a lot of attention, to say the least. While driving from work at around 1 am, I pressed the device twice and after a while got a call from my mother saying she had received an SOS message. The response time was impressive. I asked her to track my movements and she reported that it was quite accurate.

Starting at Rs 3,799, the Safer series is an affordable range of jewellery. One can choose from different colours and styles.

Given the concern around the safety of women in Indian cities, this range of jewellery could well find many takers.
