Airtel Payments Bank on Thursday appointed  Anubrata Biswas as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

In his new role, Anubrata will be responsible for driving Airtel Payments Bank’s mission of taking convenient and innovative digital banking services to the doorstep of every Indian, Bharti Airtel said in a statement on Thursday.

Prior to joining Airtel Payments Bank, Anubrata was Joint General Manager and Retail Business Head - South India for ICICI Bank.

Airtel Payments Bank's former Shashi Arora quit the company in December 2017 following the e-KYC controversy. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had temporarily barred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based verification of customers using the e-KYC process.

“We are delighted to have Anubrata on board. I am confident that his experience will add immense value to the bank’s agenda of financial inclusion and digital leadership. I wish him the very best for his new assignment,” Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Airtel Payments Bank commented on Anubrata's appointment.

Anubrata has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University and did his PGDBM from IIM, Ahmedabad. Airtel Payments Bank was the first payments bank to start operations in India.
