Indo German Carbons Limited (IGCL), an Mfar group company, is setting up a new manufacturing unit at the industrial development area of Edayar near here at an investment of Rs 5 crore.
IGCL is engaged in the production of coconut shell activated carbon.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, MM Basheer, managing director of IGCL, said a new company— Cochin Surfactants Private Limited — would be formed for the proposed project. The unit will have a capacity of 2,000 tonnes annually.
IGCL is also planning to set up a unit in Karnataka and marketing offices in West Asia, Australia and Korea, he added
In 2007, the company started its unit — Active Char Products Private Limited — at Edayar with a capacity of 5000 tonnes. It had invested Rs 10 crore in the facility.

Last year, it launched its subsidiary company in the US to expand sales and marketing activities across the world and to provide technical support to the end users.
Basheer said by 2011 they were targeting to become the world leader in this sector.
IGCL recently acquired an industrial unit in the same line of production in Tamil Nadu having a production capacity of 3,500 tonnes per annum.
The company now has a total production capacity of 14,000 tonnes with an annual turnover of Rs 100 crore, he said.
IGCL, which is a 100 per cent export-oriented unit, was set up in 1995.
