Lagaan To Be Aired On Us Television Today

BUSINESS STANDARD

Lagaan, an Oscar-nominated film from Aamir Khan Productions, is set to hit the American television screens today. Starz Encore Group LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation and one of the largest provider of cable and satellite-delivered premium movie channels in the US, is presenting the American television premiere of the film today.

Sneha Rajani, assistant vice-president, SET Pictures, the films division of Sony Entertainment Television (SET) India said, "Yes, Starz Encore is premiering Lagaan on American television on August 12."

Lagaan was distributed theatrically in the US by Sony Pictures Classics in May and it is now coming to STARZ! subscribers' television screens.

SET India owns the terrestrial and cable and satellite television rights for Lagaan across the world. The rights were sold to Columbia Tristar International (CTI), who will in turn sell the rights to cable and satellite companies and terrestrial broadcasters across the world. STARZ Encore is one such deal in America. In India however, SET holds only the exclusive cable and satellite rights.

Prior to this deal, CTI had sold the rights to Channel 4, the terrestrial broadcaster in the UK a month ago. Rajani informed that in the next few weeks CTI would be selling the rights to all major territories across US, UK and the Asia-Pacific. The announcements on this front is expected soon.

In India, the film is being shown on STARZ! under the programme band Cinematheque. The band offers the best of highly acclaimed movies that break the Hollywood mould.

SATRZ Encore owns 15 domestic channels with approximately 121 million pay units. Starz Encore offers the Starz Super PakSM, with up to 12 digital movie channels, and Starz On DemandSM, the first premium subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service.
