A C Muthiah-promoted Southern Petrochemicals Industries Corporation Limited (SPIC) has restarted operations at its urea plant in Tuticorin. The plant was shut for nearly 40 days.

The plant was closed on October 30, 2013 for maintenance purposes and due to working capital constraints. Sources also attributed poor off take of the fertilizer as a reason.

Sources said that the company can reach annual production target even if it runs for 10 months a year. Taking this into account, at the beginning of summer, normally the plant will be closed for maintenance for two months.

Last year the plant was closed during the winter season for similar reasons.

The Spic's factory, one of the largest fertilizer plants in the country, has a capacity of 6.25 lakh tonne.
