Beating the blues that plagued the Bollywood box office for the past week, Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd's BMPL) Ragini MMS 2 has got off to a good start with an opening day collection of Rs 8.25 crore. The film saw slight slump on Saturday with collections dropping to Rs 7.5 crore but rose again on Sunday toRs 8.48 crore. The first weekend collection stood at Rs 24. 33 crore. This is one of the best openings for a movie in 2014.
This means that if the film continues to do good business in the week, it could break even in the first week itself. Made at a budget of Rs 20 crore, the film needs to make Rs 40 crore (net) at the box office so that the producers' share covers its cost. The movie's satellite rights are yet to be sold and its music rights have been reportedly been sold to T-series for Rs 3 to 4 crore.
Just like on Friday, the film's Sunday collection was slightly affected by the ICC Twenty-20 World Cup since India played West Indies. On Friday too, the evening shows saw 10 per cent drop in collections for the evening shows due to the India-Pakistan match.
An analyst says on the condition of anonymity, "While the film's music and Sunny Leone have managed to draw audiences in the first weekend, the film may not give the same returns as its predecessor. The budget of the movie is much higher than Ragini MMS. We will have to see how the movie does beyond the first weekend."
The film is a sequel to BMPL's 2011 hit Ragini MMS directed by Pawan Kriplani starring Rajkumar Rao (of Shahid and Kai Po Che fame) and Kainaz Motivala. The second installment in the series is directed by Bhushan Patel and stars Sunny Leone, Pravin Dabbas, Anita Hassan Andani and Saahil Prem.
Ragini MMS turned out to be quite the money spinner for the producers raking in a life time collection of nearly Rs 10 crore. As a result, the producers made Rs 5 crore on a movie they spent under Rs 2 crore on from start to finish. In other words, the return on investment on Ragini MMS was alsmot 2.5 times.
The film takes off from where the first part ended, with a film-maker deciding to make a movie based on the incidents in part one. As a result, the film's crew goes to the sameplace where the lead actors went in the first installment. Once there, everyone experiences spooky and creepy incidents .
