A HelpAge India survey in 12 cities shows abuse of the elderly is growing in India, with one in two old people facing abuse at home. This abuse takes the form of verbal abuse, disrespect and neglect, and sometimes economic exploitation, said the survey which covered a sample size of 100 old people in each city. Not just in metros, this trend can be seen in smaller cities as well. The son and daughter-in-law, supposed to be primary care givers in Indian families, are the biggest perpetrators of abuse. An emerging trend is of the daughter turning abuser. Most abused old people are reluctant to go to police as they want to keep family matters confidential.
