The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress reacted sharply to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's portraits adorning floats at the Republic Day parade held in Chennai on Monday.

Jayalalithaa had quit as chief minister last year after she was convicted in a corruption case.

While Jayalalithaa's portraits were visible, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam's pictures were missing.

"The Central government should take action on this. I don't know how is it fair to display the portrait of a person in government functions, who has been convicted, sentenced and then given a bail by the court," said E V K S Elangovan, president, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.

"The Tamil Nadu government should apologise to the people for this insulting portrayal of the state," said M K Stalin, treasurer, DMK.
