Rising belatedly to the repeated reminders of the Odisha government for grant of funds to undertake the relief and rehabilitation work in the aftermath of devastation caused by Phailin and subsequent floods, the Union government has granted an interim assistance of Rs 1000 crore to the state.
The move from the Centre comes after a delegation led by Congress ruled Andhra Pradesh chief minister called on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and presented a memorandum regarding the losses suffered owing to the impact of cyclone and the subsequent heavy rains and floods in the neighbouring state.
"Prime Minister has announced an interim assistance of Rs 1000 crore each for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for relief and rehabilitation. The total quantum of assistance to the states will be finalized after consideration of the on-the spot assessment report of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team", read a PIB release.
