)
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will on Friday inaugurate Mumbai airport’s integrated terminal, T2, which will boost the airport capacity to 40 million (from the existing 30 million) and should improve passenger experience.
With the launch of T2, Mumbai joins Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore, that have modern integrated airport terminals.
Delhi airport’s T3 became operational in 2010, ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Mumbai’s project got stuck.
The new terminal will have a bigger check-in area, more immigration and security counters and a larger retail area.
Initially, the integrated terminal will only handle international flights, with domestic operations shifting next year.
The development marks closure of the first phase of the Mumbai airport modernisation, which began in 2006.
The airport is being modernised by the GVK Group, in a public-private partnership with Airport Authority of India.
GVK is expected to announce the opening date for the terminal on Friday.
