Andhra to construct social welfare hostels

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to construct 467 integrated social welfare hostels in two years at a cost of Rs 1,144.15 crore. A decision to this effect was taken by chief minister, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, at a review meeting held on Tuesday.
According to an official press release, the chief minister told the officials concerned that funds would not be a problem for construction of the hostels. An amount of Rs 500 crore would be allocated in 2010-11, while the balance Rs 644.15 crore would be provided during 2011-12.
Reddy wanted the AP Educational Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation to take up the construction activity.
He asked the officials to go ahead with the tender process and begin the work from February 1, 2010.
At present, the social welfare hostels in the state are functioning from private and government buildings, which lack academic atmosphere.
