Arjun Munda wins Kharsawan assembly by-poll

Continuity of Arjun Munda as chief minister of Jharkhand got the seal today in the by-election of Kharsawan Assembly constituency which elected him to the Assembly by 61,700 votes. Munda defeated his nearest rival former chief minister Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) candidate Dashrath alias Krishna Gagrai by 17,386 votes.
The Kharsawan Assembly by-poll was held on February 10 after sitting BJP MLA Mangal Singh Soy resigned two months ago to pave the way for Munda to become MLA. Munda was sworn-in as Jharkhand’s eighth chief minister on September 11 last year and in order to retain his position he has to become MLA within six months from the date.
Munda was elected MLA thrice from Kharsawan since 1995. He resigned from this constituency and elected to Lok Sabha from Jamshedpur parliamentary seat in the last general elections.
After the result was declared Munda told media that his fast and foremost priority would be to resolve the water crisis in the state.
