The Assam government has constituted a one-man enquiry Commission, headed by Justice (Retd.) Mutum B.K. Singh, retired judge of Gauhati High Court, to inquire into the recent riots that originated in Kokrajhar and later spread to other nearby districts in Lower Assam.
“The one-man Commission of Inquiry will ascertain the root causes leading to the clashes between the minority and the Bodo communities and subsequent violence. It will also identify the individuals and organisations responsible for the violence and will also fix responsibility. The Commission will also determine the lapses, if any, on the part of civil and police administration in tackling the situation,” a government statement said.
The riots led to the death of nearly 100 persons and resulted in the loss of properties and displacement of more than four lakh people.
