The Assam government's "thrust" would be on education, solving unemployment problem, women's empowerment and on communication in the next one year, said Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here today.

"The state has forged ahead on various fronts in the past almost 14 years, but there are still problems to be addressed. We will ensure speedier development in the next one year and take up a host of development and welfare oriented schemes and programmes," said Gogoi, while laying the foundation stone of Central Library, at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati.

The present government's term is due to end in May 2016. Gogoi said that the state government had all along laid emphasis on education and taken up a slew of initiatives leading to "sea change" in the education firmament.

"Ever since we assumed office way back in 2001, our thrust has all along been on education and that, too, in tune with the modern times. No society can forge ahead without education. Today a lot of changes has taken place in the education sector with the coming up of a number of institutions in the state," he said.
