Fire in office cripples BSNL services

Around 65,000 telephone lines, 12,000 broadband lines, 1,600 lease lines, and 60 important business establishments connected by ISDN primary route access are out of service now in the city after a fire broke out at a BSNL office here.

Fire tenders took two hours to control the blaze last night at BSNL's Hungerford Street office. Apart from the broadband and the landline connections, 1,600 lease lines and 55 Remote Satellite Exchange (RSUS) connected by Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) have tripped.

Line restoration plans are being worked out by company officials, said an official of BSNL.

“Recovery process will start from 9 July and the whole process of recovery is expected to be completed within seven days,” said an official press release on Tuesday. For all affected landlines, customers talk time of Rs 100 in their mobile phones of any operators would be adjusted with the next telephone bill.

 

Moroever, three service centres - at Telephone Bhavan, Ballygunge Place and Entally Telephone Exchange - for free voice and data services are opened now between 10am and 10pm.
