GST: A checkered journey

The goods and services tax (GST) was finally launched on midnight of Friday, after missing successive deadlines, over seven years after it was originally scheduled to be introduced on April 1, 2010. The new indirect tax regime has been introduced with the relaxed timeline given to assessees for filing returns for the first two months of July and September.
