Press Trust of India Mumbai

In the wake of overnight terror strikes, Indian Security forces today launched a major counter-offensive against the militants holed up in various installations across the city.

Combined forces of National Security Guards (NSGs), Navy, Army, Mumbai Police and Anti-Terrorist Squad have been rushed to tackle an unknown number of militants, who are hiding in Taj Hotel, Trident (formerly Oberoi) Hotel and Nariman House, all business and leisure hot spots in the capital city.

About 800 army personnel, 400 NSGs, 40 Marine commandos, 600 Rapid Action Force personnel besides Mumbai Police officers are engaged in a fierce gun battle with the militants.

The operation, which was launched last night is still continuing and the Mumbai Police has already lost 12 of its personnel, including three senior officers in the encounter.

All the security personnel, armed with sophisticated weapons and communication equipments were put in strategic locations in all the three sites and are coordinating with each other.

The operation has become complicated considering the fact that a large number of guests, including foreigners, are holed up in the hotels.

About 40 of them are also believed to be taken as hostages by the militants and are being shifted from one floor to the other frequently.
