No decision has so far been taken on creation of Indian Education Service (IES), Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told the Rajya Sabha today.
"There is no decision on creation of Indian Education Service (IES). But, a sub-group has recently been constituted to explore the possibility and desirability of creating IES. It will submit its report within three months," he said answering supplementaries during Question Hour.
He said although the National Education Policy provides for establishment of IES as an all-India service, there was no consensus among the state governments because of which the IES could not be established.
Sibal said the proposal for having IES was in context of higher education, but since 90 per cent of engineering colleges and 50 per cent of medical colleges were private institutions, it was not possible for the IES to look into their affairs.
