The indefinite general strike (Sakala Janula Samme) call given by the joint action committee(JAC) of all the public servants, including teachers and employees of state-owned organisations in the Telangana region, received total response on the first day on Tuesday despite the threat of ‘no-work no pay’ and imposition of the Essential Services Maintenance Act.

According to reports, there was poor attendance of government staff in nine of the ten Telangana districts outside Hyderabad. Incidentally, all the collectors of Telangana districts, except Mahaboobnagar, could not participate in the video conference held by revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy on Tuesday on account of absence of support staff or blockades created by the agitators.

Mining in the Singareni Coalfields spread across four districts came to a complete standstill. Students and political activists took out rallies across the region in support of the strike call and their demand for separate Telangana.
