Coastal states need to accelerate the implementation of measures initiated to prevent people from illegally entering the county via sea in the wake of 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai, a top Navy officer today said.
"Coastal security-related steps are being taken by state agencies and governments... People are doing their best but the pace at which things are moving is rather slow," Vice- Admiral S K Damle, Flag Officer commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command, told reporters at 'INS Mandovi' near here.
After November 26, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, coastal security, especially on western flank, has become important with states emerging as key players in safety aspect, he said, adding that identification at sea is a major challenge.
Damle said the Navy and Coast Guard have set up joint operation rooms as part of security strengthening mechanism.
"But we have to interact with local fishermen or people who are dependent on sea for their livelihood. For this the states will have to frame their own policies," he said.
