The Telecom Commission (TC), the decision making body of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has approved Rs-10,000 crore project for setting up of optical fibre network for defence forces.

DoT would now circulate a Cabinet note on the proposal by November 26, to obtain an approval by December 3. The project was cleared in the TC meeting today.

With this, the defence ministry would release 25 MHz of 3G spectrum in the 1920 MHz-1980 Mhz band before December 7.

The defence had agreed to release the frequency but with a pre-condition that the government would clear the proposal for laying of an alternative optical fibre network for the military before that date and create a monitoring mechanism for the project’s implementation.
