Truckers Call Off Strike

Our Economy Bureau  |  BUSINESS STANDARD

With a split evident in their ranks, truckers today called off the 10-day nationwide strike even though they failed to extract any major concession from the government.

An agreement ending the strike was signed after four hours of negotiations between representatives of the All-India Motor Transport Congress and the petroleum and road transport ministries.

However, B S Dhumal, president of the union, claimed that the government had agreed to nine of their 10 demands, including an early cut in diesel prices.

He said the strike should have ended four days ago, when the government had accepted seven demands.
