Facebook hits 1 billion monthly active users

The company had hit 500 mn users in July 2010

Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Thursday the social media company reached the 1 billion active monthly users threshold last month.

At the end of June, Facebook had 955 million active monthly users. The company had hit 500 million users in July 2010.

In a post on the website, Zuckerberg said: “If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

 

The top countries where people connected from at the time Facebook reached this milestone were Brazil, India, Indonesia,Mexico and the United States. At present, Facebook has 600 million mobile users.

Along with hitting a 1 billion user base, the company also released some interesting details. For instance, the median age of users is 22-years. Since its launch in Feburary 2009, over 1.13 trillion likes have been received, and 140.3 billion friend connections made.

Almost 219 billion photos have been uploaded. The data was pulled on Septmeber 9, 2012, and represents the total  number of photos currently on this site – in other words, it excludes deleted photos. “If we wanted to include all photos ever uploaded, the estimate we have is 265 billion. Photo uploading was launched in fall 2005,” said the company.

About 62.6 million songs have been played 22 billion times— that’s about 210,000 years of music.
