US 'surprised' Indian diplomat case dismissed

A federal judge ruled that Khobragade had broad immunity from prosecution when she was indicted

APPTI Washington
The US State Department has expressed surprise over the dismissal of a case against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade whose arrest and strip-search in New York caused a rift in US-Indian relations.

A federal judge ruled that Khobragade, 39, had broad immunity from prosecution when she was indicted on charges of fraudulently obtaining a work visa for her housekeeper and lying to the government about the maid's pay.

Spokeswoman Jen Psaki today said the State Department was surprised by the dismissal of the indictment.

She did not elaborate and referred further questions to the Justice Department.
