At least 14 people have been killed in two separate terrorist attacks in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, security forces said.

According to the BBC, an explosion outside a police station in El-Arish killed eight people and injured 45 others. Another bomb attack on an armoured vehicle near the northern town of Sheikh Zuweid killed six soldiers and injured two.

Militants from the Sinai Province group, affiliated to Islamic State, have claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Sinai has witnessed several violent attacks in the past ever since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. Insurgents have intensified attacks after Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the military in 2013.
