A powerful earthquake has reportedly hit Western Iran close to the Iraq border and has injured dozens of Iranians.

The quake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and hit at a depth of about 10 km in a region 36 kilometers southeast of the Iranian city of Abdanan on Monday. About 50 people have been injured in the three provinces of Ilam, Lorestan and Khuzestan, reported CNN.

It has also impacted the water, electricity supply and phone lines in the city.

The local authorities suspect widespread destruction in the rural areas close to the epicenter, which was about 40 Km away from the Iraqi border and also close to Iranian oil exploration and production facilities.

The United States Geological Survey said that the earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks.
