A constable, who was arrested after being accused of raping a minor girl in the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday pleaded his innocence, adding that he was being framed.

The constable, Avnish Yadav, was one of two policemen accused of sexually assaulting the minor.

"Yadav, along with his colleague, sexually assaulted a minor girl. A case was registered against him but he had fled the area. Today, we received information and in a joint operation with the team from Badaun, we arrested Yadav from a temple outside the railway station here," Bareilly City Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mehrotra told ANI.

"He has been handed over to the Badaun Police. He will be produced in the court tomorrow. However, the other accused is still at large," he added.

Earlier this week, the Government of Uttar Pradesh had announced a compensation of Rs. five lakh for the victim.

The two accused constables have also been dismissed from service, while two sub-inspectors and the station house officer of Musa Jhag Police Station have reportedly been suspended.

According to the victim's family, the constables reportedly dragged the girl to their quarters when she left her house to use the bathroom and then allegedly raped her.

This incident comes just a year after two minor cousins were found hanging from a tree in Badaun.
