The Union Cabinet on Friday decided to impose President's Rule in Andhra Pradesh, which is being split to create the new state of Telangana.

The state has been without a chief minister after N. Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned from the post and the Congress Party to protest against the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 2013, which paved the way for the creation of the new state of Telangana.

Andhra Pradesh Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan had recommended for a spell of central rule after Reddy's resignation.

The assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh are due along with the Lok Sabha elections.
