ANI New Delhi [India]

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed the Election Commission of India's (ECI) plea opposing the parole release of don-turned politician Mukhtar Ansari.

The ECI moved the High Court after a Central Bureau of India (CBI) court granted parole to Ansari to campaign in his constituency, Mau, for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

The BSP leader has been facing trial from the CBI court in Delhi since 2005 in connection with the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Krishnanand Rai.

Rai, along with six others, was gunned down in Ghazipur.

In 2013, the Supreme Court transferred the case from Ghazipur to Delhi after Alka Rai, the wife of Krishnanand Rai, filed a plea in the court.

Ansari, currently lodged in Lucknow jail, has over 40 criminal cases against him including that of murder and kidnapping.
