Reacting sharply on Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray's demand of declaring India a 'Hindu Rashtra', the Janata Dal (United) on Friday said that diverse society of India would teach the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally 'a lesson' if they engage in any such process.

"Pakistan was created on basis of religion, but India chose secularism and accepted democracy. But these people (BJP, Shiv Sena) they neither believe in democracy nor secularism, and keep demanding these things (Hindu Rahstra), but if they try to implement this, the diverse society of India would teach them a befitting lesson," JD (U) leader Ali Anwar told ANI.

Anwar further criticised both the parties for raising such demands saying 'they were from the same clan'.

"The BJP and the Shiv Sena are of the same clan, there is an internal scuffle going on between both of these parties which is why these demands are being raised," he added.

Thackeray had said yesterday that the country should be declared a Hindu Rashtra and demanded an imposition of uniform civil code in the country.

In his 45-minute speech he criticised Pakistan, Muslims and secularists. He further criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the issue of Ram Mandir and their 'soft approach' towards Pakistan.
