A Dutch cyclist has broken the speed record on a bicycle as he hit more than 83mph when he paddled through the Nevada desert.

Sebastiaan Bowier clocked 133.78kmh (83.13mph) on his record-breaking run at Battle Mountain, Sky News reported.

The 23-year-old beat the previous bicycle speed record set by Canadian Sam Whittingham at the same location in 2009 by just 0.6kmh (0.37mph).

He clocked his top speed on a 200-metre stretch of road after an 8km run-up.

The recumbent bike used by Bowier was designed by students at the Delft University of Technology and VU University Amsterdam and was tested in a wind tunnel before taking to the track.

Known as the VeloX3, it has a carbon fibre frame which is shaped to reduce the air resistance encountered by normal road bikes.

The wheels and the frame are enclosed in a streamlined chassis, which is covered with the same type of coating used on Formula One cars.
