A former Afghanistan national football team coach has been hospitalized after he was stabbed near his home just outside the capital city of Kabul, police said.

Fifty-two-year-old Mohammad Yousef Kargar played a vital role in rebuilding the team after the Taliban regime, which had banned almost all sports, crumbled in 2001, reported the BBC.

He also led the team to their greatest success in 2013 when they claimed the South Asian Football Federation title.

The motive behind the attack is unclear.
