Francois Hollande is considering handing former partner Segolene Royal a top ministerial post in his cabinet reshuffle later this year, it has been revealed.

France's Nouvel Observateur magazine has revealed that there are no obstacles for Royal to return to government as the French president has recently dumped First Lady Valerie Trierweiler, the Mirror reported.

Sources revealed that Trierweiler was determined that the 60-year-old French politician would have no place in his new government.

Hollande's partner for 30 years and mother of his four children had previously refused to comment on his private life, which he appreciates, and has told her friends that she is "ready when the moment comes" for a significant new role in France's government.

Trierweiler split from the 59-year-old President after his affair with Julie Gayet was made public.
