Avicii has admitted that he had no choice but to hang up his headphones because life on the road was starting to take a toll on his health.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the Swedish DJ-and-producer explained his decision, saying "To me it was something I had to do for my health. The scene was not for me."

The 'Wake Me Up' hit-maker said that it was not the shows and the music that never came naturally to him, but always the other stuff surrounding them, adding "I'm more of an introverted person in general. It was always very hard for me. I took on board too much negative energy, I think."

The 26-year-old star, who suffered acute pancreatitis in 2012 and had his appendix and gallbladder removed two years later, is still battling with ailments, but he has admitted that he's already seen a huge improvement in his stress levels since his announcement.

He noted, "I'm happier than I have been in a very long time. I can't say I'm never going to have a show again. I just don't think I'm going to go back to the touring life."

Avicii's retirement comes just five months after he released his second studio LP True.
