Leaders of a pro-democracy student group in Hong Kong have suspended discussions with the government after the police arrested members of the triad criminal gangs.
Activists have also been protesting at plans by China to examine the election candidates and occupying parts of the city.
According to the BBC, the group said that the authorities could not protect the protesters.
Police said that they had arrested members of the triad criminal gangs and denied colluding with those who used violence against the protesters.
Hong Kong's leader called for talks on Thursday to resolve the crisis after protesters demanded his resignation.
