A blast in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri District late on Thursday disrupted normalcy in the area.

A bomb tied to a bicycle ticked off late in the evening on a day when the region was observing its martyrs day.

Five people died on the spot. Relatives of a victim, who was the sole bread earner of the family, mourned and wailed inconsolably as soon as they were informed about his fate.

"I don't know what happened there. A blast occurred there and my brother was lying there all burnt. He had gone to the shop to have tea," said a devastated sister of one of the victims on Friday.

A high alert has been sounded across north Bengal after the incident. Also, a security team has been investigating the site since the mishap.

Nine people were injured in the blast. Some were rushed to the Japaiguri district hospital and others were taken to a hospital in the nearby Siliguri District.

"As per the information we have received, five people have died on the spot. And the patients who have been admitted here are very critical," said a doctor in Siliguri.

The blast took place two days ahead of the foundation day of Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), which came up in 1996.

Reportedly, Kamtapur Liberation Organisation militants are suspected to have triggered this bomb blast in Jalpaiguri District.
