American Jordan Spieth has taken a one -shot lead over the tournament drawcards Rory Mcilroy and Adam Scott after the opening round of the Australian Open Golf Championship in Sydney.

Spieth posted a four under par 67 with six birdies and two bogeys to lead Australians Aaron Price and Scott Gardiner. US Masters runner-up said that it was a solid round as he putted great and would try to keep it consistent tomorrow, Sport24 reported.

However, Rory Mcilroy, who is defending the title, believes that he hadn't played good as he hit a couple of loose shots in the middle.

McIlroy had a terrific year, with winning two majors (the British Open and the US PGA Championship), a World Golf Championship title (WGC-Bridgestone) and the flagship event of the European Tour (BMW PGA Championship) to finish the season at the peak of the world rankings.
