Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has urged team manager Louis van Gaal to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham.
Reports claim that Rooney has told Van Gaal that he was a huge fan of Kane, with United now hoping that a 40 million pound bid would tempt Spurs into selling their prized asset, the Mirror reported.
The Tottenham striker, who scored 31 goals and earned an England cap last season, was identified as an ideal foil for the captain by United.
United are in the market for at least one striker following their decision not to take up the option of signing the Colombian Radamel Falcao from Monaco after a lean season-long loan at Old Trafford.
Robin van Persie's future at the club is also in danger, with the player unwilling to play a bit-part role in the squad and expected to demand a move elsewhere.
