Russia and China on Wednesday agreed to coordinate efforts to resolve the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The Russian news agency TASS quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement that, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui today met and discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

"An agreement was reached to continue closely coordinating Russian and Chinese efforts aimed at finding a political and diplomatic solution to the issue," the statement said.

A military hotline between North Korea and South Korea has also been restored after two years, said local media reports.

According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korea made the notification during high-level talks at the border truce village of Panmunjom held to discuss its participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and ways to improve their ties.

The North's delegation said the western military communication channel was restored last Wednesday along with another direct line at the border village, through which the two Koreas arranged Tuesday's high-level talks.

North Korea disconnected both lines in February 2016 in protest at Seoul's shutdown of a joint industrial complex.
