Samajwadi Party leader Gaurav Bhatia on Thursday said that an FIR has been launched over the religious conversions in Agra by groups linked to the BJP's ideological mentor RSS and assured the people of quick action.
"An FIR has been registered over the issue and action will be taken. The government will not let communal forces work here," the Samajwadi Party leader said.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav avoided commenting on the ongoing controversy, saying the opposition parties try to derive political benefits from any incident that happens in the state.
A united opposition mounted pressure on the BJP-led government in the Lok Sabha and demanded an explanation from the Centre over the conversions organized in Agra reportedly by groups linked to the RSS.
Around 200 people were reportedly converted to Hinduism in a ceremony in Agra by groups linked to the BJP's ideological mentor RSS.
Bajrang Dal and Dharam Jagran Manch, the groups that performed the mass conversions, reportedly claimed that the families were originally Hindus and converted to Islam around 30 years ago.
